How We Make Juice
Our beliefs are simple and straightforward. The best ingredients make the best juice. Being in the farming mecca of Northern California means that we have access to superior produce. Since our philosophy of sustainability is aimed not only at our planet but at our bodies as well, we believe in supporting local organic farms and sourcing only 100% organic, non-GMO ingredients. Our juices and cleanses are designed to rid your body of toxins and non-organic conventional produce is saturated with harmful chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and chemical fertilizers. Our goal is whole health and to that end, we use whole organic ingredients.
All of our juices are extracted using a hydraulic press, the machine revolutionized by Dr. Norman Walker. Unlike commonly used centrifugal and masticating juicers, which heat and aerate the juice by grinding the fruits and vegetables to a pulp at high speeds, hydraulic presses maintain the temperature of the produce and limit oxidation by exerting thousands of pounds of pressure slowly and completely. This process is not as taxing on the cell walls of fruits and vegetables. By maintaining the integrity of the plants’ cellular structure, the cold press method yields the purest form of extracted juice with the highest density of nutrients and flavor. We bottle our juices in glass because it retains the flavor of the juice and is the safest material to drink from (glass does not degrade or leach chemicals). Each bottle is topped off to limit oxidation and avoid degradation of the juice, thus preserving the juice’s nutrients and live enzymes.
Before there was ever a juice shop, we were just a family taking care of each other. It all began in 1998 when, as a freshman in high school, Charlie Gulick, (oldest brother and Juice Shop co-founder) returned from a surfing trip in Central America extremely ill. After four years, many misdiagnoses, and countless unsuccessful surgeries, he was finally diagnosed with a rare liver condition called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. Told he would have to endure a lifetime of endoscopic procedures and ultimately a liver transplant, our family looked for an alternative approach. At the world-renowned Hippocrates Health Institute, Charlie was placed on a strict regimen of raw vegan food, with an emphasis on detoxification through juicing. The results showed immediately, not only in how he felt (his symptoms had vanished), but in blood analysis as well (his liver functions were back to normal). When he returned home after a six weeks, the entire family decided to support Charlie by going raw and committing to the juicing lifestyle.
After a year of being symptom-free, Charlie's doctors were nothing short of amazed, calling it a "miraculous recovery." It's been close to a decade since he saw the inside of a surgery room and he has never felt better. Today, Juice Shop is three brothers—Charlie, Ben, and Jake—and Charlie's wife, Lina. We share our story to encourage others to come to us with theirs. And because juicing allowed us to face our own health challenges, we feel better prepared to help others in their paths towards whole health.
